Shed Foundation: Why It Should Be First On Your List

A solid shed foundation isn't exactly the first thing people think of when they're thinking about purchasing a shed. Overlook this step though, and it could cause you problems later. A solid shed starts with a solid foundation. A shed that has its foundation build the correct way though will work much better over it's lifetime. So let's discuss the options: -Wood-based shed foundation -Concrete pier foundation -Concrete slab foundation Shed Foundation: Wood-based Believe it or not wood foundations can be one of the best. It is certainly the quickest and least expensive, and if you get pressure treated beams, you can avoid a lot of problems with rot, and other issues commonly associated with using wood as a foundation. The key to eliminating rot is that the timber needs room to breathe so that it can dry out if it gets wet. If you ever need to move your shed, wood foundations will make it that much easier to accomplish. Although you still need pretty level ground for this type of foundation to work, it's a lot easier than other types of foundations. Pier Shed Foundation What if your ground isn't level? You want to go for concrete piers. It isn't too big of a deal to level up the shed with the right combination of piers and shims. Also the concrete is much less susceptible (compared to wood) to rot. Time is much kinder to it than other materials such as wood. The fact that it doesn't move as easily as other methods is one disadvantage to consider though. Concrete Shed Foundation You'll want to use these for a variety of reasons, but none of those reasons include portability. You'll end up breaking up a foundation like that instead of moving it. If done right, you can't have a better foundation, but you can run into problems if it isn't level, or not thick enough. You want to be sure you do your homework though. Ideally you want a smooth surface for your shed to lay on. That's the ultimate goal and if your foundation done properly, you'll be well on your way. Greg Prather
